Information on LUA dalmatians
Some dalmatians have a muted gene called High Uric Acid (HUA), which they can't break down proteins in the food like most dogs. If the dog can not break down the proteins by using their liver a byproduct called allantoin is excreted into the kidneys and into the bladder and it makes uric acid. Thew uric acid can not dissolve well in urine and crystals or stones are made and in some cases the stones can block the urethra and in some cases surgery can resolve it, and sometimes it ends in death. in order to correct this condition, in 1973 Dr.Robert Schailbe a dalmatian breeder, bred a dalmatian to a pointer and than the off springs back to a purred dalmatian. The goal of this backcross was to produce normal dalmatians without having to worry about bladder stones. So we decided it was time to do something to help, eliminate the problem for good here in Canada. We have introduced and are breeding the LUA Dalmatian in Canada. for more information please check out this website :
